Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by an American physician called Andrew Taylor Still. He was the first to identify the human immune system, and recognised its ability in the course of disease. He was discontent with the use of medications at that time, and believed that instead of treating and curing disease, they were only masking the symptoms. Through experimentation and clinical observation, he developed a range of techniques applied to the musculoskeletal system, which would in turn affect the other systems in the body. He strongly believed that to have disease in one part of the body, other parts must be affected. This began the medicine of Osteopathy.

In short, Osteopathy is a gentle, holistic manual medicine that strengthens and treats the joints, muscles and ligaments in the musculoskeletal system, allowing the nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems to function optimally. Since the 19th century, Osteopathy has become widely accepted, and now there are over 40,000 Osteopaths worldwide.

Who can benefit from Osteopathic treatment?

Most people come to see an osteopath because they are in physical pain. We commonly see conditions such as:

     Neck/back pain
     Headaches/migraines
     Postural problems
     Sports injuries
     Jaw pain
     Sciatica
     Repetitive Strain Injury (R.S.I.)
     Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
     Pregnancy related problems
     Menstrual Pain

Treatment is suitable for most members of the community, from babies to the elderly.

What does a treatment involve?

Osteopaths are primary health care practitioners, like general practitioners, which means that they are trained to perform medical clinical examinations. The consultation will begin with a full medical history, followed by a physical examination, which may involve some orthopaedic testing, postural examination, range of motion screening, and a palpatory examination. Osteopaths have a finely tuned sense of touch, which they use to detect areas of stress, strain or weakness, in order to find out the cause of your symptoms.

Techniques used may involve some or all of the following:

Various soft tissue techniques on the muscles, tendons and ligaments
     Stretching
Articulation (encouraging the range of motion in a joint)
     Joint manipulation

Your osteopath may also prescribe strengthening and stretching exercises to speed up your recovery.
